RHETT COULDN’T BEAR TO BURY BONNIE
RHETT COULDN’T BEAR TO BURY BONNIE… BECAUSE SHE WAS AFRAID OF THE DARKOne of the most heartbreaking details in Gone With the Wind comes after the death of Bonnie Blue Butler.
Rhett was completely shattered by the loss of his little girl. But when it came time to prepare for her funeral, he refused to let anyone bury her.
Why?
Bonnie was terrified of the dark.
Rhett kept Bonnie’s body in his room and insisted that the room remain brightly lit. In his grief, he couldn’t bear the thought of putting his little girl underground in a dark grave when he knew how frightened she had always been of darkness.
It was Mammy who finally went to Melanie for help, believing Melanie was the one person Rhett might listen to.
And she was right.
Melanie went into Rhett’s room and somehow managed to reach the devastated father when no one else could. Rhett finally agreed to allow Bonnie’s funeral to take place, while Melanie stayed with him through the night.
It is one of those moments when Rhett’s usual confidence and sarcasm completely disappear.
He wasn’t thinking about what was logical.
He was simply a father who couldn’t bear the thought of his little girl being frightened and alone in the dark.
