Gone with the Wind
Emmy Slattery was hardly in the movie, but was a symbolic character in Gone with the Wind. Originally a poor white woman living near the O’Hara plantation, she becomes involved with Jonas Wilkerson, Tara’s overseer, and is dismissed in disgrace after he gets her pregnant. Later after the war, Emmy returns as Wilkerson’s wife, now socially elevated and aligned with the Northerners. Her character represents the dramatic social shifts after the Civil War when people once viewed as “poor white t****” gained power while the old Southern aristocracy fell. Though she appears briefly, Emmy Slattery’s story highlights class prejudice, moral hypocrisy, and the crumbling of the Old South rigid social order.
