Losing you changed the way the world sounds
Losing you changed the way the world sounds.
The house is quieter, the mornings slower,
the nights a little heavier than they used to be.
At first, I didn’t know how to move without you—
how to take steps you once walked beside me for.
It felt like I was walking alone
through a place that used to be filled
with tail-wagged joy and warm, familiar breath.
But grief has its own way of teaching,
and one lesson came softly,
like a secret whispered into the heart:
Love leaves tracks.
Yours did.
In the rug where you used to nap,
in the corners where you stored your toys,
in the doorway where you always waited
as if my return was the best moment of your day.
And even now,
when I can’t see your paws on the floor,
I still feel them—
a trail of comfort leading forward,
quiet but sure,
like love pointing the way.
Sometimes those pawprints lead me to tears.
Sometimes to laughter.
Sometimes to a memory so vivid
I swear you’re brushing past my leg
just like you used to.
But always—
always—
they lead me on.
You taught me how to live with wonder,
how to open my heart without hesitation,
how to love fully
even when I knew goodbye would someday come.
Your pawprints didn’t end at the Rainbow Bridge.
They continued—
into who I am now,
into the choices I make,
into the kindness I offer the world
because you once offered it to me.
When days are heavy,
I imagine us walking again—
you trotting just ahead,
tail swaying like a little flag of hope,
turning back every so often
as if to say,
Keep going.
I’m right here.
Follow me.
And I do.
Step by soft step.
Heart guided by love instead of loss.
Grief began my journey,
but your pawprints carry it forward—
not into forgetting,
but into living with you still.
Because love does not end.
It becomes a path.
And your pawprints?
They lead me on.
