At first glance
At first glance, it looks like a rainbow suspended in midair… but this stunning arc over the desert is actually one of the rarest atmospheric optics ever recorded. When sunlight passes through billions of tiny ice crystals drifting high in the atmosphere, each crystal acts like a microscopic prism—bending, splitting, and scattering the light into perfect geometry. Under extremely specific conditions, all those individual prisms align just right, forming a flawless circular halo around the sun.
Captured against the red-rock formations of Arches National Park, the phenomenon becomes even more surreal. The contrast between the warm sandstone, the cold winter air, and the crystal-filled sky creates a scene that looks almost impossible.
A full solar halo this vibrant is incredibly rare, which is why photographers from around the world rush to witness moments like this: a perfect union of light, ice, and desert landscape.
