Anita Ekberg

Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg (1931–2015), a Swedish beauty and screen icon whose elegance and charisma captured international audiences. Ekberg first rose to prominence after winning the Miss Sweden title in 1950, which led her to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. Though she did not claim the crown, she earned a starlet’s contract with Universal Studios, where she trained in acting, dance, horseback riding, and fencing—skills that would later define her screen presence.

Ekberg appeared in early films such as Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953) and Blood Alley (1955), and gained attention in Paramount comedies alongside Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. However, her career-defining moment came in 1960 when Federico Fellini cast her as Sylvia in La Dolce Vita. Her unforgettable scene at Rome’s Trevi Fountain with Marcello Mastroianni became one of cinema’s most iconic images, solidifying her status as a symbol of glamour and allure. She continued to work in international cinema, co-starring with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in 4 for Texas (1963), and later appearing in Fellini’s The Clowns (1972) and Intervista (1987).

Anita Ekberg lived much of her life in Italy, making the country her home from 1964. She passed away on January 11, 2015, at the age of 83, after enduring long-term health complications. Her remains are buried at Skanör Church Cemetery in Sweden, leaving a legacy of timeless elegance and unforgettable cinematic artistry.
