Today, we pause to honor Robert Middleton, the versatile actor whose commanding presence and distinctive voice made him one of Hollywood’s most memorable villains. Known on-screen for playing some of the most formidable and sinister characters, Middleton was, in real life, a cheerful and playful gentleman who delighted in practical jokes with his family.Middleton’s deep, smooth voice initially earned him steady work in radio, which sparked his passion for acting. By the early 1950s, he had reached Broadway with a role in Ondine, a performance that opened doors to film and television. He became renowned for his chilling portrayals in films such as The Desperate Hours (1955), where he played a sadistic killer, and The Court Jester (1956), as a grim knight opposite Danny Kaye in the iconic “pellet with the poison” sequence. Demonstrating his range, Middleton also shone in dramatic and humorous roles, including Friendly Persuasion alongside Gary Cooper.
His final film, The Lincoln Conspiracy (1977), saw him portray Edwin M. Stanton before his untimely passing later that year. Robert Middleton’s legacy endures in the depth, intensity, and humanity he brought to every role.
