Olavinlinna

Olavinlinna is a medieval castle located in the city of Savonlinna in Finland. Among the best preserved in all of northern Europe, today it hosts the opera festival, which lasts a month.
Founded in 1475 by Erik Axelsson Tott, governor of the city of Vyborg and the Eastern Provinces, Olavinlinna was dedicated to Olaf, a Norwegian saint who lived in the 11th century, and was built for the purpose of protecting the eastern border of the Swedish empire.
The Russians occupied it from 1714 to 1721 and re-appropriated it again in 1743, maintaining possession until 1847.
A curiosity about the method of payment of the soldiers in defense of the castle: they received five liters of beer a day and seven on Sundays.
