Maple Street

This house on Maple Street in Springfield was built in 1879 as the home of newlyweds Frederick and Emily Harris. The house was expanded over the years, and they lived here for the rest of their lives. Frederick died in 1926, but Emily was still living here when the first photo was taken in the late 1930s.
Today, the house is still standing as one of the best-preserved of Springfield’s many Gilded Age mansions. It occupies a prominent location on a bluff to the southeast of downtown Springfield, and it has expansive views of both the city and the surrounding Connecticut River Valley.
