STRANGERS ON A TRAIN
"STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951)
This American psychological thriller film stars Robert Walker, Farley Granger, Pat Hitchcock, Ruth Roman, Marion Lone, Kasey Rogers, Norma Varden and Leo G. Carroll. It was produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock and was based on the 1950 novel, of the same name, by Patricia Highsmith. The film initially received mixed reviews but has since been regarded much more favorably. It was nominated for 3 Awards, including the Oscar for "Best Picture", which is what put it into the schedule, but it didn't win any. In 2021 it was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. American Film Institute listed the film as #32 in "AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills."
SYNOPSIS: "In Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's thriller, tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger) is enraged by his trampy wife's refusal to finalize their divorce so he can wed senator's daughter Anne (Ruth Roman). He strikes up a conversation with a stranger, Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), and unwittingly sets in motion a deadly chain of events. Psychopathic Bruno kills Guy's wife, then urges Guy to reciprocate by killing Bruno's father. Meanwhile, Guy is murder suspect number one."
