BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ

 "BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ" --- (1962) ---

MY THOUGHTS: I am a real fan of films that are based "true stories." This one is a fascinating story and one that I truly enjoyed learning about. Add to that, the fact that it is an incredibly well-done film, with stellar performances from its talented cast members: Burt Lancaster, Karl Malden and Thelma Ritter (who is amazing in her role and proves with it, that she can do so much more than the comic roles she is known for). Betty Field is also very good in this film. The cinematography is first-rate, and there are many scenes which are more impactful, because of how black & white is used. A wonderful movie all the way around!
SYNOPSIS: "Sentenced to life in solitary confinement after killing a prison guard, despondent inmate Robert Stroud combats loneliness and tedium by nursing an ailing bird back to health. Stroud develops an interest in caring for birds and becomes a talented ornithologist. After publishing a book on bird diseases from jail, he meets and marries Stella, a fellow bird enthusiast. When Stroud is suddenly moved to Alcatraz, though, his marriage and work are both threatened."
STARRING: Burt Lancaster, Betty Field, Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter, Telly Savales and Edmond O'Brien.
