NOTHING IN COMMON
"NOTHING IN COMMON" --- (1986) ---
MY THOUGHTS: This is a terrific movie, as are all Garry Marshall films (in my humble opinion). It is worth watching, if just to see Jackie Gleason's final film role (which he does a marvelous job with). It also stars a young Tom Hanks, who is more than able to hold his own in the scenes with Gleason. Together they do a great job of presenting a troubled, yet ultimately loving relationship between father and son. It is also nice seeing Eva Marie Saint, who turns in a great performance as Gleason's long-suffering wife. Their scenes together are heartbreaking, but important to the storyline and reconciling Gleason's character's past. Very enjoyable film.
SCENARIO: "A successful advertising executive, David Basner, is working on a project that could make him partner at his company. When his parents suddenly end their 36-year marriage, he is thrown into the role of caregiver, dealing with his delicate mother, Lorraine, and his combative father, Max, who provides constant aggravation and bitter remarks. When one of his parents gets sick, David must choose what is more important, his family or his career."
STARRING: Jackie Gleason, Tom Hanks, Eva Marie Saint, Sela Ward, Bess Armstrong, Hector Elizondo, Barry Corbin and Carol Messing.
SCREENPLAY: Rick Podell and Michael Preminger.
DIRECTOR: Garry Marshall
