ODE TO BILLY JOE
"ODE TO BILLY JOE" --- (1976) ---
MY THOUGHTS: I re-visited this movie on June 3rd, because according to the song (which the film is based on) everything took place on that date. I hadn't seen it for quite some time, and it was just as I remembered it. It brought back a lot of memories. (as did re-listening to the song that day). I know it didn't fare well with the critics, but I always liked it well enough and thought that Robby Benson and Glynnis O'Connor did a good job in their roles.
SYNOPSIS: "The song, which the film is based on, recounts the day when Billie Joe McAllister committed suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge on Choctaw Ridge, Mississippi. When Gentry discussed the screenplay with Raucher, she explained she did not know why the real person who inspired the character of Billie Joe had killed himself. Raucher thus had a free hand to pick a reason. His novelization of the story, published the year of the film's release as a movie tie-in, used the same rationale for the suicide."
STARRING: Robby Benson, Glynnis O'Connor, William Hallberg, Rebecca Jemigan, James Best and Terrance Goodman.
SCREENPLAY: Herman Raucher; based on "Ode to Billie Joe" 1967 song by Bobbie Gentry.
DIRECTOR: Max Baer, Jr.
