Trivia of Paulette Goddard
Trivia of Paulette Goddard (3 June 1905 - 23 April 1990)
*Mauren Levy (later Paulette Goddard) began modeling after her parents' separation, working for Saks Fifth Avenue, Hattie Carnegie, and others. An important figure in her childhood was her mother's paternal uncle Charles Goddard, the owner of the American Druggists Syndicate. He played a central role in Goddard's career, introducing her to Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegfeld. In 1926, she made her stage debut as a dancer in Ziegfeld's summer revue, No Foolin' under the stage name Paulette Goddard.
*In 1932 she met Charles Chaplin, and they soon (secretly) married. He cast her in Modern Times (1936), which was a big hit and it was her first credited film appearance and garnered her mainly positive reviews.
*Paulette Goddard was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress (her only nomination) for her performance in So Proudly We Hail! (1943), co-starring with Claudette Colbert and Veronica Lake.During shooting, a rift occurred between Claudette Colbert and Paulette Goddard after Colbert overheard Goddard say that she and Veronica Lake were closer friends because they were the same age. Colbert was miffed because Goddard (38 at the time) was closer to Colbert's age (39) than Lake's (20).
*Because she would not do a dangerous stunt in Unconquered (1947), Cecil B. DeMille rejected her acceptance of a key role in The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) and cast Gloria Grahame, who was eight years younger, and agreed to do the stunt, instead.
*Paulette Goddard was David O. Selznick's first choice to play Scarlett O'Hara of Fine With the Wind (1939). He and his wife Irene Mayer Selznick lived next door to Paulette and Charles Chaplin. There's rumor it was Chaplin's unpopular politics that allegedly caused her to lose the role.
*Though she had been one of the most popular stars of the early 1940s, Goddard was not in demand by the end of the decades. Her last movie was Gli Indifferenti (1964) starring Claudia Cardinale .In the end her career as entertainer, she did appear in a made-for-TV film called The Female Instinct (1972).
*Goddard never had any children, but she became a stepmother to Charles Chaplin's two sons, Charles Chaplin Jr. and Sydney Chaplin, while she and Charlie were married. In his memoirs, "My Father Charlie Chaplin," from 1960, Charles Jr. describes her as a lovely, caring and intelligent woman throughout the book.
