Pete Duel


  Pete Duel (February 24, 1940 – December 31, 1971), a talented stage, television, and film actor whose charm and presence made him a beloved figure in 1960s and 70s American television.

Duel is best remembered for his starring role as outlaw Hannibal Heyes / Joshua Smith in the hit television series Alias Smith and Jones, where his charismatic portrayal of the lovable, reformed outlaw captured audiences’ hearts. He also appeared in popular series such as Gidget, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Bonanza, Combat!, The Bold Ones, Ironside, and Marcus Welby, M.D., showcasing his versatility across comedy and drama.

A dedicated actor, Duel worked steadily in Hollywood, building a reputation for professionalism and charm. However, he struggled with personal challenges, including depression and issues related to alcohol. Tragically, on December 31, 1971, Duel passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Hollywood Hills. His death was later ruled a suicide.

Pete Duel is laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery. His performances, especially as Hannibal Heyes, continue to resonate with fans of classic television, celebrating the warmth, humor, and talent he brought to the screen.
