Agnes Moorehead

Agnes Moorehead (December 6, 1900 – April 30, 1974) was one of America's most versatile and accomplished actresses, spanning five decades across stage, radio, film, and television. She began performing as a child, sang on local radio programs, and in 1937 joined Orson Welles' legendary Mercury Theatre Players, moving to Hollywood with the troupe. Her film debut was unforgettable—playing Mary Kane, Charles Foster Kane's mother in Orson Welles' masterpiece "Citizen Kane" (1941)—and her next film with Welles, "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942), earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to receive four Academy Award nominations total (1942, 1945, 1949, 1965) for films including "Johnny Belinda" and "Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte." Moorehead won two Golden Globe Awards (1945 for "Mrs. Parkington" and 1965 for "Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte") and one Emmy Award (1967 for "The Wild, Wild West" episode "Night of the Vicious Valentine"), with six additional Emmy nominations, most for her iconic role as Endora on "Bewitched." She appeared in more than 70 films and dozens of television shows, but modern audiences most remember her as the sarcastic, acid-tongued witch-mother Endora on "Bewitched" (1964–1972)—the beloved mother of Elizabeth Montgomery's Samantha who spent 8 years mocking Darrin and constantly scheming with her magic. Her other film credits include "Dark Passage" (1947) with Humphrey Bogart, "Charlotte's Web" (1973, voice), and "Frankenstein: The True Story" (1973). One of the first women co-host of the Oscars, posthumously honored by St. Louis Walk of Fame, and a 1947 Honorary Doctorate recipient from Muskingum College (where she also served on the Board of Trustees), Agnes Moorehead remains a legendary figure in American entertainment whose character development and range earned her lasting respect as one of Hollywood's greatest character actresses.
