Petticoat Junction
April 4, 1970, the final episode of Petticoat Junction aired on CBS. The series originally ran from September 24, 1963 to April 4, 1970.Created by Paul Henning, the show was one of three interrelated rural sitcoms alongside The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres. Set at the Shady Rest Hotel in Hooterville, it centered on Kate Bradley, played by Bea Benaderet, her three daughters, and their quirky small-town neighbors, including Uncle Joe Carson (Edgar Buchanan*) and storekeeper Sam Drucker (Frank Cady).
The series was inspired by stories from Henning’s wife about her childhood at a Missouri hotel, and it became a fan favorite for its gentle humor and memorable characters, including the Hooterville Cannonball train. Despite strong ratings, the show ended during CBS’s shift away from rural-themed programming.
