Princess Helena
May 25, 1846: Princess Helena of the United Kingdom, Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstëin, was born at Buckingham Palace to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Their fifth child, she was educated by private tutors chosen by her father and his close friend and adviser, Baron Stockmar, and her childhood was spent with her parents, travelling between a variety of royal residences in Britain. In 1866 she married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, the couple remaining in Britain, within calling distance of the Queen who liked to have her daughters nearby. She was the most active member of the royal family as well as an active patron of charities and was one of the founding members of the British Red Cross.
