Henry II
May 25, 1555: Henry II, King of Navarre, died at age fifty-two in Hagetmau. Born in Sangüesa to Queen Catherine and King John III, he succeeded his mother on her death in 1517. The title was also claimed by King Fernando II of Aragón, who had invaded the realm in 1512 and usurped the title, and the claim was continued by his grandson Carlos V, but Henry enjoyed the protection of King François I of France, who also happened to be his brother-in-law. "In 1525, Henry was taken prisoner at the Battle of Pavia, but he contrived to escape under a guise and in 1526, married Marguerite, sister of François and widow of Charles, Duke of Alençon. In 1530, after the Treaty of Cambrai between Castile and France, Charles V evacuated the northernmost county of Navarre, Lower Navarre, allowing Henry to seize it." (W) He was succeeded by his only living child Jeanne III.
