“Cry Wolf,” (1947)

Another atmospheric thriller with an actor in an uncharacteristic role: “Cry Wolf,” (1947). Stanwyck is a newly married woman whose husband, played by Richard Basehart, is reported dead. She turns up at his family’s estate and meets his foreboding uncle, played by Errol Flynn and his kid sister. It’s apparent from the start that something’s amiss and that Flynn is at the center of it. She has to negotiate the mystery to discover the truth. We are so used to Flynn in his heroic mode that when he plays these darker, more ambiguous parts, it comes as a bit of a surprise. A welcome one, at that.
