Something truly tragic happened today
“Something truly tragic happened today,” my little daughter said very seriously. “I took my big doll to preschool. I was playing with Noah, and he slammed her against the wall so hard that her arms and legs fell off. And then… I hit him with a toy tank. And you know what? I got punished! They made me stand in the corner forever. Well… almost forever.”
“Come here,” I said. “We’ll share this tragedy together. We’ll put pillows in the corner, bring cookies and books, and I’ll whisper something in your ear: boys do not always mean to hurt you. And their silly behavior is not worth even one of your tears. I promise you, a new day will come, and your doll will get her arms and legs back.”“Mom, something awful happened today. In gym class, my friend Lily laughed at me in front of all the girls because I didn’t know that TikTok dance. I’m never going back to school again!”
“Shhh, sweetheart. These are just little storms. You know what? On Tuesday, in that gym, you’re going to dance so well that even TikTok will be embarrassed. You pick the music, and I’ll dance with you all evening.”
“Mom, today I really learned what pain feels like. I saw him walking with another girl, holding her arm. He looked at her so warmly. He smiled at her like that… and I couldn’t even take a step. It felt like the ground had glued me in place.”
“Your soul was made to fly like a beautiful bird. Do not cry for someone who only knows how to step on what is tender. You will remember this pain, yes, but you will also become stronger. Come here and let me hold you, just like I did when you were in preschool. I know how to take some of that weight off your heart.”
“Today is a rainy day,” my daughter whispered. “Now I understand what real sadness is. Because Mom… Mom is no longer anyone’s little girl.”
I took out our soft pillows. We placed them in the corner, the way we always had when the world hurt too much. Only this time, she was the one holding me, comforting me, and listening.
“Now I understand,” she said quietly.
“Sometimes words are not needed,” I answered. “Sometimes a look is enough. I love you, my little girl.”
“Did you sit in the corner like this with Grandma too, when you were sad?”
“Yes, sweetheart. In every storm, I was someone’s daughter. And somehow, every time, I grew wings again.”
“And now? How do you live when someone you love is gone?”
“We carry the people we love inside our hearts.”
