Dorothy Wilson

Dorothy Wilson, 1909-1998 was a secretary at RKO and took dictation for director Gregory La Cava among others. She was requested to do a screen test which landed her a lead role in "The Age of Consent" 1932 with Richard Cromell, Arline Judge abd Eric Linden and she received good notices. She went on working as an actress enjoying the work and the good pay as but she was not ambitious nor did she like the Hollywood scene. Her performances were very good and she worked with Harold Lloyd, Richard Dix, Tom Keene, Preston Foster, and Douglass Montgomery. A stand out role is her performance as Edith Landreth, secretary to Harriett Craig, played by Rosalind Russell, in "Craig's Wife" in 1936 directed by Dorothy Arzner. She made one last film in 1937 then married screenwriter Lewis R. Foster who would go on to win an Oscar for the script for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". Wilson did audition for the role of Melanie Wilkes in "Gone With the Wind" and said it was the only time she might have been persuaded to return to acting. She did an uncredited bit in 1943 but she devoted herelf to raising two sons with her husband in Lompoc, CA. Foster died in 1974 and she died in 1998 at age 88.
