Son of the Gods
"Son of the Gods" 1930 Constance Bennett and Richard Barthelmess, this was a bold attempt in addressing the fear of caucasians of miscegenation. Bennett has a love/hate for Barthelmess when she learns he's Chinese and even whips him. We are shown a ten cents a dance club where chinese men dance with white women and Barthelmess is there when Bennett's dad finally finds him to inform him that his daughter is ill and is calling for him. We don't see her talking to her and holding her hand, but we're told of it in exposition and also about her recovery. ***Spoiler Alert*** We also learn from an Irish police officer who was in San Francisco when the deserted foundling was found, and although no one ever knew his parents, they somehow know that he's caucasian. Of course that foundling was Barthelmess so now, learning of this in the nick of time, Barthelmess and Bennett can marry!
Richard Barthelmess chose roles which carried messages of social justice but "Son of the Gods" didn't work while his 1933 film about Native American Indians did work well.
