BOYZ 'N THE HOOD
"BOYZ 'N THE HOOD" (1991)
MY THOUGHTS:
John Singleton was an amazing writer, storyteller and filmmaker. Ha made history, when he became the first African American to be nominated for the Academy Award for both the "Best Screenplay" and "Best Director" categories ...and, on his first film! He went on, in a very short span of time, to amass a body of work that have made their mark in film history and depict history itself, at specific points in time and varied places. He was a voice that was silenced far too soon, but film IS "forever", and he has left quite a legacy. He has also helped to launch a couple of movie / music careers, that are as equally successful as his. This was his debut film, and it is a very good one! (Although my personal favorite, as a history buff, is "Rosewood.")
SCENARIO:
"Tre is sent to live with his father, Furious Styles, in tough South Central Los Angeles. Although his hard-nosed father instills proper values and respect in him, and his devout girlfriend Brandi teaches him about faith, Tre's friends Doughboy and Ricky don't have the same kind of support and are drawn into the neighborhood's booming drug and gang culture, with increasingly tragic results."
STARRING:
Cuba Gooding Jr., Larry Fishburne, Nia Long, Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut
SCREENPLAY:
John Singleton

John Singleton
AWARDS & OTHER HONORS:
It was nominated for thirty-six (36) awards, two of which were Academy Awards, and won twelve (12) of them. It did not, however, win an Oscar.
In 2002 it was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry at The Library of Congress.
