One Night at Susie's
"One Night at Susie's" 1930 Directed by John Francis Dillon for First National. Starring Billie Dove, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Helen Ware, Tully Marshall, James Crane, John Loder. There are many sumptuous shots, photographic compositions really, in this film with touches of the German expressionistic influence and gorgeous art deco. This film reminded me a bit of Mervyn LeRoy's "Little Caesar" to some degree which Fairbanks Jr. was also in the same year. Susie is Helen Ware who raised Fairbanks Jr. to keep out of trouble although she has mob friends. But Douglas announces he's marrying a chorus girl and in self-defense, she murders her boss and Douglas takes the blame. What follows is a very touching film and even though there aren't many who go for movies this early, I still heartedly recommend it.
