Remember The Night (1940)
Production Company: Paramount Pictures
Directed : Mitchell Leisen
Starring : Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray
Plot : Just before Christmas, Lee Leander (Barbara Stanwyck) is caught shoplifting. It is her third offense. She is prosecuted by John Sargent (Fred MacMurray). He postpones the trial because it is hard to get a conviction at Christmas time. However, he feels sorry for her and arranges for her bail; he also ends up taking her home to his mother for Christmas. Surrounded by a loving family (in stark contrast to Lee's own family background), they fall in love. This creates a new problem: how do they handle the upcoming trial?.
Trivia : *Barbara Stanwyck originally turned down the role of Lee Leander as (after checking on her kitchen scales) she found her fingers to be too heavy to play the light-fingered lead character. Director Mitchell Leisen assured her they could use hand doubles if necessary and Stanwyck accepted the part.
*It's a Christmas movie with no Christmas music.
*First of four films pairing Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. The other three are Double Indemnity (1944), The Moonlighter (1953), and There's Always Tomorrow (1956).
