The 38th Academy Awards


 The 38th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1965, were held on April 18, 1966, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. They were hosted by Bob Hope and were the first Oscars to be broadcast live in color. Lynda Bird Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, attended the ceremony, escorted by actor George Hamilton.

The Best Picture Oscar went to "The Sound of Music" over "Darling", Dr. Zhivago", "Ship of Fools". "A Thousand Clowns".
Robert Wise won Best Director for "The Sound of Music" over William Wyler "The Collector", John Schlesinger "Darling", David Lean "Dr. Zhivago", Hiroshi Teshigahara "Woman in the Dunes".
Lee Marvin won Best Actor for "Cat Ballou" over Richard Burton "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", Laurence Olivier "Othello", Rod Steiger "The Pawnbroker", Oskar Werner "Ship of Fools".
Julie Christie won Best Actress for "Darling" over Julie Andrews "The Sound of Music", Samantha Eggar "The Collector", Elizabeth Hartman "A Patch of Blue", Simone Signoret "A Ship of Fools".
Martin Balsam won Best Supporting Actor for "A Thousand Clowns" over Ian Bannen "The Flight of the Phoenix", Tom Courtenay "Dr. Zhivago", Michael Dunn "Ship of Fools", Frank Finlay "Othello".
Shelley Winters won Best Supporting Actress for "A Patch of Blue" over Ruth Gordon "Inside Daisy Clover", Joyce Redman "Othello", Maggie Smith "Othello", Peggy Wood "The Sound of Music".
