I will never punish my child for telling the truth

I will never punish my child for telling the truth

Because if they get in trouble for being honest
They’ll stop being honest
If they learn that truth equals yelling
Or shame
Or punishment
They’ll start hiding things
Lying
Withholding

And one day it won’t be a spilled cup or a broken toy
It will be something that matters
Something that hurts
Something that could change everything
And they’ll keep it to themselves
Because they’ll think they can’t come to me

So even when the truth is hard to hear
Even when I’m upset
Even when it would be easier to react
I choose to listen
To stay soft
To say thank you for telling me
To show them they are safe with me

Because I’d rather deal with the hard truth today
Than wonder what they’re keeping from me tomorrow
