The 59th Academy Awards ceremony, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), took place on March 30, 1987, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.
"Platoon" won Best Picture over "Children of a Lesser God", "Hannah and Her Sisters", "The Mission", "A Room with a View".
Oliver Stone won Best Director for "Platoon" over David Lynch "Blue Velvet", Woody Allen "Hannah and Her Sisters", Roland Joffe "The Mission", James Ivory "A Room with a View".
Paul Newman won Best Actor for "The Color of Money" over Dexter Gordon "Round Midnight", Bob Hoskins "Mona Lisa", William Hurt "Children of a Lesser God", James Woods "Salvador".
Marlee Matlin won Best Actress for "Children of a Lesser God" over Jane Fonda "The Morning After", Sissy Spacek "Crimes of the Heart", Kathleen Turner "Peggy Sue Got Married", Sigourney Weaver "Aliens".
Michael Caine won Best Supporting Actor for "Hannah and Her Sisters" over Tom Berenger "Platoon", Willem Dafoe "Platoon", Denholm Elliot "A Room with a View", Dennis Hopper "Hoosiers".
Dianne Wiest won Best Supporting Actress for "Hannah and Her Sisters" over Tess Harper "Crimes of the Heart", Piper Laurie "Children of a Lesser God", Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio "The Color of Money", Maggie Smith "A Room with a View".
