A man was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. The plane had a layover in Sacramento. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft, the plane would re-board in one hour. Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. Another man had noticed him as he walked by and could tell the gentleman was blind because his Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him throughout the entire flight.   Narcisten hebben vaak moeite om alleen te zijn, omdat stilte en eenzaamheid hen kunnen confronteren met onzekerheid, leegte of emoties die ze voortdurend proberen te vermijden. In plaats van innerlijke rust in zichzelf te vinden, zoeken ze vaak aandacht, bevestiging of emotionele reacties van anderen om zich belangrijk, gewenst of in controle te voelen. Dat kan zich uiten in het snel aangaan van nieuwe relaties, constant behoefte hebben aan contact of mensen emotioneel dichtbij houden voor voortdurende aandacht en bevestiging. Alleen zijn betekent voor hen soms dat er geen externe bron meer is die hun ego voedt of afleiding geeft van wat ze innerlijk voelen. Toch betekent dit niet dat iedereen die moeite heeft met eenzaamheid automatisch narcistisch is. Smoky was a 4 lb, 7 inches tall, Yorkshire Terrier who served in World War II. In 1944 Smoky was found in a foxhole in the jungles of New Guinea by an American soldier who brought her back to camp and sold her to Corporal William A. Wynne for $6.44. For the next 2 years, Smoky lived a soldier's life. Because she was not an official military dog, she did not get dog food or medical care. She shared Wynne’s meals and slept beside him in his tent. The little dog even flew 12 air/sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions, secured in the soldier's backpack. She survived 150 air raids and saved Wynne by warning him of incoming shells.
