6 Animals Humans Sent Into Extinction, Eliza B. for It's Historia
The Eurasian Auroch was a large wild ox, native to the steppes of Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia. Fully grown they stood 1.8 metres (6 feet) high with large curved horns.
They were very aggressive and this lead to them being used as sport in Roman arenas. They were also hunted excessively to the point that by the 13th century they were on the brink of extinction and only nobles and royals were given permission to hunt them.
In 1564 a royal inventory gamekeepers found that only 38 of the animals were left. The last known Eurasian Auroch died in 1627 in Poland of natural causes.
