Crowhurst Yew

The Crowhurst Yew is an ancient yew tree located in the churchyard of St. George's Church in Crowhurst, Surrey, England.

Believed to be around 4,000 years old, its girth was recorded as 30 feet (9.1 m) in 1630. The tree was noted by John Evelyn in 1664 and later mentioned by John Aubrey in his Natural History and Antiquities of the County of Surrey (1718–19).

This male tree, situated to the east-northeast of the church, had a girth of 32 feet 11 inches (10.03 m) measured in 2013 at a height of 4 feet (1.2 m).

It has a hollow interior, accessible through a 4-foot-high (1.2 m) door. When the hollow was created in 1820, a cannonball—likely from a nearby English Civil War skirmish—was found embedded in the tree. At one point, the Parish Council held meetings inside the tree.
