Taiwan


I'll bet a lot of big-tree seekers don't know that the island-nation of Taiwan has some of the world's largest trees--like this giant Formosan cypress (19 ft. dbh and over 130 ft. tall). It's located in the rugged forest-covered Alishan National Recreation Area of central Taiwan at an elevation of about 8500 ft. above sea level. My brother and I visited Alishan in 1956, surviving a huge typhoon that destroyed the narrow-gauge railway. But that's another story....
