1776
1776 James Cook, as captain of the HMS Resolution, sailed from Plymouth on his final voyage.
The real reason for this journey was to locate a Northwest Passage, an English term for a perceived sea route north and west around North America.
Cook nearly succeeded, he came within fifty miles of the western entrance to the passage, but he was defeated by freezing weather, violent currents, and ice flows. With his crew ready to mutiny, Cook reluctantly turned south eventually he discovered the island of Hawaii where he met his death in 1778.
