April 29, 1833: Anglo-Irish physician and mineralogist William Babington died at age seventy-six in London. Born in Portglenone, near Coleraine, Antrim, Ireland, he was apprenticed to a practitioner in Londonderry and afterwards completed his medical education at Guy's Hospital, London. He was a founding member of the Geological Society of London, serving as president from 1822 to 1824, and he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1805. The mineral Babingtonite is named after him.
