 How does a masked hero become part of American folklore?

Clayton Moore will forever be remembered as The Lone Ranger. With his white hat, black mask, and the call of “Hi-Yo Silver, away!”, Moore became a symbol of justice, honor, and old-school heroism for generations of TV viewers.

Born in 1914, Moore began his career as a stuntman and actor in B-movie Westerns. But everything changed when he was cast in the television adaptation of The Lone Ranger in 1949. His portrayal of the noble, stoic lawman struck a chord with American families.

Moore believed in the Ranger's code of ethics so deeply that he continued living by them long after the show ended. Even in public appearances, he wore the mask and spoke in the same measured, moral tone.

When he was legally forbidden from wearing the mask in public during a dispute with the studio, he donned sunglasses instead—and the public rallied behind him. The court later ruled in his favor.
