"FLOWER DRUM SONG" (1961)
This musical comedy is an adaptation of the 1958 Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway show. This film is another classic with a wonderful ensemble cast. It includes: Nancy Kwan, Jack Soo, Miyoshi Ukema, James Shigeta, Juanita Hall, James Hong and Benson Fong. They are wonderful, as is the rest of the cast. This film has a fun story, with many plot twists and a couple of memorable songs: "Chop Suey" and "I Enjoy Being A Girl." It was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, and its inclusion in the schedule was due to the one for "Best Costume Design." It was also nominated for 2 Golden Globes, 1 Grammy and a total of 3 other awards as well. In 2008, it was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry at The Library of Congress.
SYNOPSIS: "In this adaptation of the 1958 Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical, Chinese immigrant Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) is betrothed to nightclub boss Sammy Fong (Jack Soo), but he wants to marry showgirl Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). To get out of the arrangement, Sammy pawns her off to wealthy Master Wang (Benson Fong) as a fiancƩe for his son, Wang Ta (Victor Sen Yung). Mei Li falls in love with Wang, but he wants to pursue Linda, who takes advantage of his affections to test Sammy's love."
