Lice
Lice were everywhere in the medieval period.
.
Lice were present in any social scale, from the poorest to the richest.
Medieval folklore, suggests that lard was used to try and suffocate lice and nits.
Peasant women would sit outside talking, while picking off their daughter's lice.
It was considered a social gathering, a time to sit and gossip with the neighbours.
Medieval de-lousers used combs and special washes, to remove lice.
Nits and lice weren't the only pests that plagued the medieval era.
Most people believed that toothaches were caused by tiny "toothworms" that lived in the teeth........
And if you had an "earworm," one physician said to sleep next to a ripe apple to draw out the worm
