Moonlighting
March 3, 1985, ABC premiered Moonlighting, starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis as wisecracking private detectives. The series ran until May 14, 1989, airing 66 episodes (67 in syndication with the pilot split into two). Blending drama, comedy, and romance, it became one of the first widely recognized examples of the “dramedy” genre. The show’s theme song, performed by jazz singer Al Jarreau, became a hit, and Moonlighting helped launch Bruce Willis into stardom while revitalizing Cybill Shepherd’s career. Its influence endures: in 1997, the episode The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice was ranked #34 on TV Guide’s 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time, and in 2007 the series was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 Best TV Shows of All Time. The romantic chemistry between David and Maddie was also recognized by TV Guide as one of the greatest TV couples ever.
