QUEEN BEE

 "QUEEN BEE" --- (1955) ---

MY THOUGHTS: This movie was new to me, and I enjoyed it very much. Joan Crawford brings so much intensity to her roles, especially when she is playing a "bad girl," and this is a prime example of that. She is menacing and maniacal at one moment, and then coy and caring the next...but, always cunning. It was a well-written role and a great storyline. What do you think about this film and her role in it? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
SYNOPSIS: "In the 1950s American South, the vicious and conniving Eva Phillips makes the lives of those around her miserable -- especially her husband, Avery, who resorts to heavy drinking and becomes an alcoholic. Meanwhile, when Eva discovers her sister-in-law is to wed her former lover, she really becomes nasty. Witnessing Eva's cruel exploits is Avery's cousin, Jennifer Stewart, who can only stand by, mortified."
STARRING: Joan Crawford, Barry Sullivan, Betsy Palmer, John Ireland, Lucy Marlow and Fay Wray.
SCREENPLAY: Ranald MacDougall; Based on "The Queen Bee"
by Edna L. Lee
DIRECTOR: Ranald MacDougall
REVIEWS, AWARDS & HONORS:
Bosley Crowther of The New York Times noted "[Miss Crawford] is the height of mellifluous meanness and frank insincerity."
William K. Zinsser of the New York Herald Tribune wrote "Miss Crawford plays her role with such silky villainy we long to see her dispatched."
Queen Bee was nominated in two categories at the 28th Academy Awards in 1956 but did not win.
