Swiss fine and rare 1kt gold and enamel sealing wax case; with a concealed Automaton made for the Chinese Market ;unsigned ca 1820
It has a tapered rectangular outline, the front with central blue and black enamel panel with engraved gold decoration, a painted polychrome enamel figure of a maiden with bow and arrow in her hands, the panels above and below decorated with black, blue and white champlevé enamel with a vase of flowers above and a harp with doves below, the hinged lower panel opening to reveal a vari-coloured gold automaton scene with two cupids forging steel for their arrows, sometimes referred to as the "Forge of Love", against a painted enamel pastoral background, the reverse similarly decorated, with a vase of flowers above, a painted polychrome enamel figure of a maiden with straw in her hand to the centre and a potted plant with birds below, an empty compartment revealed when the top portion is lifted away, the top with black and blue champlevé enamel foliate motifs, the sides with black champlevé enamel detail, unsigned 108 mm. overall height.
