The Uninvited (1944)
The first time I saw this I was absolutely turned off by the soundtrack music which really caught me off guard.
This second go around, already expecting the inappropriate music I was able to enjoy it thoroughly.
I still think the music choices are not the best, particularly during the comic bits (a lot of 'mickey mousing' going on there,) and I feel the suspenseful scenes would work better with no score at all or something a bit more subtle.
This movie falls in the category of the 'ghost mystery story', that is there is a ghost because there is a mystery, and as soon as the mystery is solved the ghost is satisfied and goes away.
I don't mind this approach even if it seems a bit silly, but when it is done movie after movie it becomes tiring to me and I find it dissolves suspense and the story ends up with nowhere to go.
This has been solved somewhat in the J-Horrors where solving the mystery makes no difference whatsoever to the ghost, or in some like Mama (2013) where the ghost is so deranged that it fails to recognize the remains of its own child, (why should it? They are just old bones...)
Here it is not that bad, as the movie involves a benign and a malign ghost and that is what somehow balances out the story.
In this case the resolution of the mystery is personal both for the ghost and for the girl, thus I am willing to give it some leeway in this particular case*...
Otherwise why would a ghost care whether the some of living know the truth of its demise or not?
No, not perfect, but pretty good.
