Franz von Sickingen
May 7, 1523: German Imperial knight Franz von Sickingen died the day after being mortally wounded during the siege of Nanstein Castle. One of the most notable figures of the early period of the Protestant Reformation, he, with Ulrich von Hutten, led the so-called "Knights' Revolt" against Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Although he was no scholar, he loved science and protected men of learning, his castles becoming a "refuge for righteousness" where many of the reformers found shelter, and a retreat was offered to Martin Luther.
