May 6, 1541

On May 6, 1541, King Henry VIII ordered that English-language bibles be placed in every Church of England.
Until that point, Latin was used for Bibles and churches. Issuing English-language bibles and forms of service allowed the people to actually understand what was being preached to them.
The Great Bible, printed first in 1539, was used for this purpose.
