Shanghai Surprise

 August 29, 1986, "Shanghai Surprise" premiered in the United States. Directed by Jim Goddard and based on Tony Kenrick's novel "Faraday's Flowers," the adventure comedy starred newlyweds Sean Penn and Madonna as, respectively, a con man and a missionary nurse searching for a cache of stolen opium in 1930s Shanghai.

The film was produced by former Beatle George Harrison's HandMade Films, with Harrison also co-writing the score alongside Michael Kamen and contributing original songs. Filming in Hong Kong and Macau in early 1986 was plagued by paparazzi chasing the famously private couple, on-set tension between Penn and director Goddard, and reported clashes between the two leads, prompting Harrison to fly in personally to help manage the chaos.

The film grossed roughly $2.3 million against a budget of $15 million and was panned by critics. It received six Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture, with Madonna winning Worst Actress. Penn and Madonna, who had married just months before filming began, divorced in 1989.
