ONE OF THE FEW TIMES WE SEE RHETT COMPLETELY BREAK DOWN
ONE OF THE FEW TIMES WE SEE RHETT COMPLETELY BREAK DOWN…Rhett Butler was a man who rarely allowed anyone to see him vulnerable. He could hide almost anything behind a drink, a sarcastic remark or that famous smile.
But after Scarlett falls down the staircase and loses their baby, that armor finally cracks.
While Scarlett is recovering, Melanie finds Rhett drinking and overcome with guilt and fear. He believes Scarlett may never forgive him, and for once, the confident Rhett Butler is gone. In front of Melanie, he breaks down and cries.
What makes the scene even more powerful is who Rhett turns to—Melanie. He trusts her enough to reveal something he has spent years hiding from Scarlett and almost everyone else: just how deeply he loves his wife.
And Melanie doesn’t judge him. She comforts him.
It’s such a different Rhett from the man we normally see—and Clark Gable plays the vulnerability beautifully.
