SCARLETT’S CLOTHES TOLD A STORY TOO

 SCARLETT’S CLOTHES TOLD A STORY TOO…

At first glance, this may look like just another beautiful portrait of Scarlett O’Hara—but look at the dress.

As the Civil War progresses in Gone With the Wind, Scarlett’s wardrobe begins changing right along with her life. The extravagant young belle we met at Twelve Oaks gradually gives way to a woman living through shortages, hospitals, wounded soldiers and eventually the destruction of Atlanta.

This patterned wartime dress is associated with that increasingly difficult period of Scarlett’s story—and versions of the costume were made to appear progressively more worn as her circumstances worsened.

Walter Plunkett’s costumes weren’t simply beautiful. They helped tell us where Scarlett was in her life without saying a word.

👗 Do you enjoy noticing little costume details like this when you rewatch the movie?
