Toto

Toto, the iconic Cairn Terrier whose charm and talent captured hearts worldwide. Originally named Terry, she was trained by Carl Spitz at his Hollywood Dog Training School and made her screen debut in Bright Eyes (1934). Her career included roles in The Dark Angel (1935), Fury (1936), The Buccaneer (1938), and Barefoot Boy (1938), but her legacy was forever cemented as Dorothy’s faithful companion in The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Paid $125 a week—more than some Munchkin actors—Toto endured hardships, including a broken foot on set, yet her dedication never wavered. She continued acting in films like Bad Little Angel (1939), Tortilla Flat (1942), and Easy to Look At (1945) before retiring at age 12. Initially buried on the Spitz family property, the site was lost to freeway construction. In 2011, a memorial stone was dedicated at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, ensuring Toto’s place in cinematic history is remembered.
