Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor, here with her brother, Howard Taylor in 1937, was destined for a life that few could imagine. Born into a family with a flair for the arts, Elizabeth’s journey to stardom was strongly influenced by her family background. Her parents, Sara Sothern and Francis Lenn Taylor, were Americans living in London at the time of her birth. Francis was a successful art dealer, while Sara had once been an actress, a profession she left behind to focus on her family. However, Sara’s love for performance played a pivotal role in shaping Elizabeth’s early interest in acting.

Howard Taylor, her elder brother by three years, shared a close bond with Elizabeth throughout their lives. While Howard didn’t pursue a career in the spotlight, he remained a steadfast supporter of his sister’s endeavors. The Taylor siblings shared a privileged upbringing, surrounded by culture and creativity. Their father’s gallery in London was frequented by notable artists, and their mother’s passion for acting often inspired lively discussions about theater and film at home. This unique environment nurtured Elizabeth’s early curiosity for the performing arts.
In 1939, as tensions in Europe escalated, the Taylor family moved to Los Angeles. This relocation proved to be a turning point for Elizabeth. Encouraged by her mother, who recognized her potential, Elizabeth began auditioning for roles in Hollywood. Her stunning violet eyes, paired with an innate talent, quickly caught the attention of casting directors. By the time she was ten, Elizabeth had already landed her first film role in "There’s One Born Every Minute," and her career took off from there.
While Elizabeth rose to fame, her family remained a grounding presence in her life. Her father, Francis, continued his work as an art dealer in California, providing a stable foundation for the family. Sara, though often behind the scenes, played a significant role in managing Elizabeth’s early career, ensuring that her contracts protected her interests. Howard, on the other hand, chose a quieter life away from the public eye, though he occasionally appeared alongside Elizabeth at events, offering quiet support.
Despite her immense fame, Elizabeth was deeply devoted to her family. She often credited her mother with instilling in her a sense of discipline and professionalism. Sara’s background in acting had given her an understanding of the industry, which she used to guide Elizabeth through its challenges. Even as Elizabeth became a global icon, she often spoke of her family with affection, emphasizing the values they had instilled in her.
As the years passed, the Taylor family experienced their share of trials and triumphs. Francis Taylor passed away in 1968, a loss that deeply affected Elizabeth. Her bond with her mother, Sara, grew even stronger during this period, and she often turned to her for guidance and comfort. Sara lived to see her daughter achieve remarkable success, passing away in 1994 at the age of 99. Howard Taylor, though largely removed from the public eye, remained a constant presence in Elizabeth’s life until her death in 2011.
