Thunderbolt

"Thunderbolt" 1929 Josef von Sternberg, written by Jules Furthman, Charles Furthman, and Herman J. Mankiewicz. Paramount Pictures.

George Bancroft, Fay Wray, Richard Arlen, Eugenie Besserer, Tully Marshall, James Spottswood, Robert Elliott, Fred Kohler, E.H. Calvert, George Irving, Mike Donlin, S.S. Stewart, Theresa Harris, William L. Thorne,
Josef von Sternberg's first sound film was also released as a silent film. George Bancroft was Oscar nominated for best actor but lost to Warner Baxter for "In Old Arizona". Von Sternberg was a master of cinematography, and the compositions of every shot are exquisite with the sets, costumes and make up creating visually stimulating images. The prison scenes are intentionally claustrophobic. Interesting how the prisoners looked impeccably groomed with no sinks or toilets and when did a prisoner on death row ever have a dog with him?
