Aemilia Lanyer

Aemilia Lanyer, also known as Emilia Lanier, was an English poet and the first woman to publish a book of original poetry in English.

She was orphaned and taken into the household of the Countess of Cumberland, agen only 18 when she became the mistress if Henry Hundson, Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin.

Lord Hudson was 40 years her senior.

She was married with Alphonso Lanyer when she became pregnant with Hundson's child .

Alphonso left her in debt but she eventually acquired the means to open a school in St Giles in the Fields.

Her most notable work is "Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum" (Hail, God, King of the Jews), published in 1611.

This book is a collection of poems that advocate for women's rights and challenge traditional gender roles. Lanyer's writing often addresses themes of female empowerment, spirituality, and social injustice.

Her contributions to literature have been recognized as significant in promoting women's voices during a time when female authors were not widely acknowledged.
